RH & LH Lock Nuts for Rod Ends and Adjusters

Jam Nuts for Rod Ends — RH & LH

A jam nut is a thin lock nut run against a rod end, tube adapter or turnbuckle to lock the thread so vibration cannot change the set length. SYZ jam nuts cover 10-32 to 1-1/4″-12 in 13 standard sizes, with RH (JNR) and LH (JNL) thread options. Standard parts are zinc-plated carbon steel; an aluminum option can be ordered with suffix A, subject to size confirmation.

Basics

What Is a Jam Nut?

A jam nut (lock nut) is a thin nut tightened against a rod end or adjuster to lock the threaded joint, preventing the setting from changing under vibration.

Adjustable linkages use a jam nut on each end — one RH, one LH — to match the rod end thread hands. SYZ marks LH nuts with grooves so fabricators can tell them apart at a glance on the build bench.

Left-Hand Identification: LH jam nuts are identified by a groove or yellow zinc plating. Use the visual mark to distinguish the left-hand nut from the RH version before assembly.

Use the RH/LH part-number pair and thread first, then confirm the low-profile height and the mating link. The part number links to the published product record; the pairing column keeps the rod end, tube adapter and turnbuckle options in one buying path.

Standard records are zinc-plated carbon steel. For an aluminum option, use the A suffix (for example JNR8A) and confirm the required size before ordering. H max. is shown in inches; the interactive spec page carries H min. and width dimensions.

Usage Guide

How to Use a Jam Nut Correctly

A jam nut locks via thread preload. Follow these rules to ensure the joint never backs out.

  • 01

    One Per Threaded End

Set the linkage center-to-center length first. Then run the jam nut down finger-tight against the rod end body before executing final torque adjustment.

  • 02

    Match the Hand Exactly

On double-adjustable links with RH one end and LH the other, you must run a RH jam nut on the RH end, and a LH jam nut on the LH end. Never try to force threads.

  • 03

    Retain Thread Engagement

The jam nut only locks the thread; it doesn’t provide structural support. Ensure the rod end retains full, recommended thread engagement inside the tube adapter at all times.

Material Options

Zinc-Plated Carbon Steel: The standard workhorse nut. Offers solid thread strength and durability across all general industrial and off-road builds.

Aluminum option: Order with the A suffix, for example JNR8A. Confirm size availability and the required material before release.

Applications

Where Jam Nuts Perform

Essential thread-locking hardware for all adjustable assemblies.

Adjustable Suspension Linkages

Required on 4-links, track bars, panhard bars, and control arms to hold structural settings under heavy terrain shocks.

Steering Link System

Locks inner and outer tie-rod adjusters to hold wheel alignment toe settings under continuous vibration.

Industrial Actuation

Used on cylinder rod extensions, linkage bars, and machinery turnbuckles to lock system adjustments in place.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is a jam nut for?
A jam nut is a low-profile nut tightened against a rod end or adapter body to lock the threaded assembly, preventing the joint from backing off or shifting under vibration.
Do I need right-hand and left-hand jam nuts?
Yes. On double-adjustable links using opposing thread directions, you need a right-hand (RH) thread jam nut on the RH end, and a left-hand (LH) thread jam nut on the LH end.
How do I identify left-hand jam nuts?
LH jam nuts are identified by a groove or yellow zinc plating; use the mark to distinguish the LH nut before assembly.
Is an aluminum jam nut option available?
An aluminum option can be ordered with suffix A, for example JNR8A. Confirm the required size and material combination before ordering.
What sizes of jam nuts are available?
Our 13 standard records cover 10-32 through 1-1/4″-12, with RH (JNR) and LH (JNL) part-number pairs.
What torque should a jam nut be tightened to?
Use the torque value specified for the mating rod end, thread and application rather than a generic jam-nut number. The rod-end torque guide explains the selection factors; send the exact assembly for a factory recommendation.
