Uniball Cups Buyers’ Guide
In UTV/ATV suspension, the “uniball joint” is a two-part system: a spherical bearing does the articulating, and a weld-in cup holds it in the control arm or knuckle. This guide explains how uniball cups work, how to match cup and bearing, and how to choose across SYZ’s 10-size 4130 chromoly range.

What Are Uniball Ball Joints and Cups?
DefinitionA uniball cup is the weld-in housing that holds a spherical bearing (the “uniball”) in a suspension mount, retained by a snap ring. Weld the cup into a control arm, knuckle or chassis tab, install the spherical bearing, retain it with the snap ring — and you have a serviceable, high-misalignment pivot built into fabricated suspension.
This is how modern UTV/ATV and off-road builds replace sealed ball joints and rubber mounts: the bearing is replaceable, the misalignment is larger, and the pivot survives repeated suspension travel. Pair the cup with a spherical plain bearing — the cup is the housing half only.

Anatomy of a Uniball Joint
StructureA uniball pivot is a system of four elements — the cup is only one of them, and everything must match together.
Uniball Cup
The machined, weld-in housing: bore (B), body OD (D) and width (W), with the snap-ring groove pre-machined. 4130 chromoly as standard for weld strength and suspension duty.
Spherical Bearing
The articulating element pressed into the cup — COM for standard width, WPB wide-series for wide cups, stainless COM-SS for corrosive use.
Snap Ring
The retaining ring that locks the bearing into the cup groove. SYZ supplies the matched snap ring part number with every cup — retention is included, not improvised.
Weld Package
The cup OD and the mount wall thickness: the weld-in joint must suit the control arm or knuckle material and thickness you are fabricating.
Standard Cups (UBC8–UBC12)
UBC8, UBC10 and UBC12 carry COM-series bearings (bore 1.0000″–1.4375″), the standard-width uniball pivot for control arms and steering links.
The default choice for UTV/ATV arms where a proven, widely available bearing family matters.
Wide Cups (UBC12W–UBC24)
The W-suffix cups (UBC12W, UBC14W, UBC16W) carry WPB wide-series bearings (WPB12T/14T/16T), while the larger UBC20 and UBC24 carry the HCOM heavy series (HCOM20/HCOM24) — more width for higher side loads on long-travel suspension.
Choose these for long-travel UTV/ATV kits and heavy off-road arms where the extra bearing width carries the load.
What the Uniball Cup Does in the Suspension
FunctionThe cup itself does not articulate — its engineering job is to make the pivot possible, accurate and permanent.
Make a custom pivot possible
Fabricated control arms have no bearing seat — the cup provides a precision-located, weld-in seat so a serviceable spherical pivot can exist in a tube-end or knuckle at all.
Retain the bearing positively
The snap-ring groove takes the bearing’s axial loads without staking or loctite — the bearing can be pressed out and replaced when it wears, reusing the arm.
Hold alignment under load
A precision-machined cup keeps the bearing square to the arm, so the misalignment envelope of the bearing — not fabrication error — defines the joint’s travel.
Survive weld-in installation
4130 chromoly welds strong and stays dimensionally stable; weld the cup, let it cool, then install the bearing — never weld near a bearing itself.
Where uniball pivots fail in the field
- Mismatching cup bore to bearing OD, or guessing the snap-ring fit.
- Welding with the bearing installed — heat ruins the bearing.
- Under-width cups side-loading the bearing on long-travel arms.
- Using mild steel cups on high-load suspension where 4130 is required.
Materials: 4130 Chromoly vs Mild Steel
MaterialsThe cup is structural and permanent — material choice is a safety decision, not a cost optimization, on UTV/ATV suspension.

4130 Chromoly
Suspension standardThe standard construction across all 10 sizes: high-strength chromoly that welds well and carries suspension loads. The correct choice for UTV/ATV control arms, knuckles and chassis pivots.

Mild Steel
General / cost useAvailable as an option for general fabrication and cost-driven programs where the pivot is not suspension-critical.

Bearing Pairing
COM vs WPBStandard cups pair with COM bearings; W-suffix wide cups pair with WPB-T. The bearing brings the PTFE or metal-to-metal race system — pick it by duty and maintenance.
Materials and Finishes
Surface treatmentUniball cups are precision-machined steel; the finishing strategy is set at fabrication.
| Treatment | Applied to | Series examples | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4130 chromoly, machined | Cup body | All 10 sizes | High-strength, weldable alloy — the suspension-duty standard. |
| Mild steel option | Cup body | On request | Economical option for general fabrication where loads are light. |
| Post-weld finishing | Assembly level | Fabricator scope | Paint or powder coat after welding protects the arm; never coat the bearing seat before install. |
Bore, OD, width and the matched snap-ring part number for every size are listed on the uniball cups spec page. Mild steel and special sizes are available for production programs.

Selection referenceMatch Cup Bore to Bearing OD
Start from the spherical bearing you will run — the cup bore (B) must match its OD exactly; COM and WPB families pair with standard and wide cups respectively.
Choose Material for Duty
4130 chromoly for UTV/ATV suspension; mild steel only for general, non-suspension fabrication.
Confirm Snap Ring Fit
Each cup lists its matched snap-ring part number — the groove and retainer are included, but the pairing must be verified.
Check the Weld Package
Confirm cup OD (D) and width (W) suit the arm wall thickness and the bracket geometry you are fabricating.
Plan the Bearing Service
Press the bearing in after welding; the snap ring makes it replaceable — design the arm so the bearing can be serviced, not thrown away.

Completing the pivot? You need the spherical bearing itself — COM for standard cups, WPB-T for wide. For threaded linkage ends, see rod ends.
