Design Concept

What Is a Johnny Joint / Rebuildable Flex Joint?

Unlike a sealed rod end, a flex joint is designed to be rebuilt. The forged housing retains a chromoly ball running on a replaceable polyurethane or Delrin bushing, and a zerk fitting lets you grease it in the field. When the bushing wears, you rebuild the joint instead of throwing the whole assembly away.

That is what makes it the default pivot for 4-link and 3-link off-road suspension, where high articulation and repeated impact destroy a conventional joint. “Johnny Joint” has become the widely used generic name for this style of rebuildable 4-bar joint; SYZ forged flex joints are a functional equivalent, made in our own factory.

Field Serviceability
Instead of discarding the entire rod end when the race wears out, you press in a new polyurethane bushing. On rock crawlers and trail rigs that see severe abuse, that is the difference between a consumable and a capital part.
A Bushing Joint, Not a Bearing
The ball rides on a compliant polymer bushing rather than a hard race, so the joint absorbs vibration and impact instead of transmitting it into the chassis — quieter and kinder to the link than a metal-to-metal heim.

SYZ Machine is a manufacturer of machinery and vehicle parts in China, and Johnny joints are one of our best-selling products. The housing and ball of our forged johnny joints are made from heat-treated 4130 chrome moly steel, and the bushing material can be polyurethane or Delrin to your requirement.

Bushing Material Guide — Polyurethane or Delrin?

Polyurethane bushings: firm, durable, and they damp road noise and vibration. The right pick for trail rigs, daily-driven off-road vehicles and 4-link rear suspensions. Used on SYZ-F001–F004 and SYZ-F015–F020.

Delrin bushings: extra firm, low friction and highly rigid, with effectively zero compression under load. The right pick for competition buggies and rock crawlers where you want the geometry to stay exactly where you set it. Used on SYZ-F005–F014.

SYZ-F005 to SYZ-F014 — Square Head Design, Delrin Bushing

The square-head housing design gives better grip during welding or adjustment. The Delrin bushing offers high precision and excellent wear resistance — the widest family in the range, covering mounting widths from 7/8″ up to 2-5/8″.

What is a Johnny Joint / rebuildable flex joint?
A rebuildable, high-misalignment joint for 4-bar suspension. The chromoly ball runs on a replaceable polyurethane or Delrin bushing, so a worn joint is rebuilt rather than replaced. “Johnny Joint” is a common generic name for this style of bushing joint.
Can Johnny Joints be rebuilt or serviced?
Yes. Many models feature a serviceable design with replaceable bushings and ball surfaces, allowing easy maintenance and extended product life. The SYZ-F015 to SYZ-F020 family adds a threaded spanner lock nut specifically to make repeated rebuilds easier, and rebuild kits are available separately.
What are they made of?
A forged 4130 heat-treated chromoly housing, zinc plated, with a hard-chrome-plated 4130 chromoly ball and a polyurethane or Delrin bushing. A weld-on rebuildable uniball version and a polished stainless version for corrosive service are also produced.
Polyurethane or Delrin bushing — which should I choose?
Polyurethane is compliant and damps noise and vibration — better for trail rigs and daily-driven vehicles. Delrin is firmer, lower friction and effectively non-compressing — better for competition buggies and rock crawlers where you want the geometry to hold. SYZ-F001–F004 and F015–F020 use polyurethane; F005–F014 use Delrin.
What size and offset should I choose?
Match three things to your bracket and link: mounting width (7/8″ to 2-5/8″ across the range), bolt diameter (7/16″ to 3/4″) and housing thread (3/4″-16, 7/8″-14, 1″-14 or 1 1/4″-12). Offset housings — 9° and 10° — are available in the SYZ-F001 to SYZ-F004 family for links that need to run off-axis; everything else is a straight 0° housing. Send us your geometry and we will pick the part number.
Which machines or vehicles typically use Johnny Joints?
