Serviceable, High-Misalignment 4-Bar Joints
Rebuildable Flex Joints
(Johnny-Joint Style)
A rebuildable flex joint is a serviceable, high-misalignment rod end for 4-link and off-road suspension — when the bushing wears, you rebuild it instead of replacing the whole joint. SYZ flex joints use a heat-treated 4130 chromoly housing and ball with polyurethane or Delrin bushings, mounting width 1.6″-7/8″, in 20 configurations with RH/LH and custom sizes — a direct functional equivalent to Johnny-Joint-style 4-bar rod ends.

Design Concept
What Is a Rebuildable Flex Joint?
Unlike a sealed rod end, a flex joint is designed to be rebuilt: the housing retains a chromoly ball running on replaceable polyurethane or Delrin bushings.
That makes it ideal for 4-link suspension and off-road, where high articulation and impact wear out a normal joint — you replace the bushing rather than the whole assembly. “Johnny Joint” is a widely used generic term for this style of rebuildable 4-bar joint; SYZ flex joints are a functional equivalent.
Field Serviceability: Instead of discarding the entire rod end when the race wears out, you press in a new polyurethane bushing. This provides massive long-term savings on off-road rigs and rock-crawlers that undergo severe abuse.
Product Specifications
Materials & Construction
| Component | Material Class | Features / Options |
|---|---|---|
| Housing | 4130 Heat-Treated Chromoly Steel | Zinc plated, custom sizing, RH/LH threads available |
| Ball | 4130 Chromoly Steel | Precision ground, hard chrome plated |
| Bushing | Polyurethane or Delrin | Fully rebuildable & replaceable wear item |
| Configurations | 0° to 15° Offset angles | 20 standard specifications |
Polyurethane Bushings: Firm, durable, and dampens road noise and vibration (NVH). Best for trail rigs, daily-driven off-road vehicles, and 4-link rear suspensions.
Delrin Bushings: Extra firm, low friction, and highly rigid. Best for competition buggies, rock crawlers, and systems requiring zero compression under load.
Comparison
Flex Joint vs. Sealed Rod End vs. Poly Bushing
Choose the right suspension joint based on travel, durability, and vibration damping needs.
| Joint Style | Rebuildable? | Articulation Range | Ride Comfort / NVH Damping | Best Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuildable Flex Joint | Yes (replace polyurethane bushing) | High range of motion | Compliant, dampens vibration & noise | High-wear 4-link or 3-link trail suspensions |
| Sealed Chromoly Rod End | No (replace entire assembly) | High range of motion | Firm, transmits metallic vibrations | Competition vehicles, race steering linkages |
| Standard Poly Bushing Mount | Yes (replace bushing) | Low range of motion | Highly compliant, maximum NVH damping | Standard street links, leaf spring shackle ends |
Applications
Where Rebuildable Flex Joints Excel
Heavy-duty suspension pivots engineered for extreme off-road articulation.
4-Link & 3-Link Suspension
Perfect for front and rear control arms in crawler builds. Absorbs impact energy while allowing full axle twist.
Radius & Trailing Arms
Handles heavy torsion loads at axle connection points. Rebuildable design reduces maintenance costs over lifetime use.
Off-Road Custom Rigs
Direct heavy-duty alternative to traditional tie-rod joints on track bars and trailing links for rock crawlers and pre-runners.
